The Nicktoons channel recently aired a teaser trailer for the English dub debut of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V animated series that is already closing out its second season in Japan. This will be the first airing of the popular animated children’s TV program in the United States, having already been released in Canada last August. Viz Media had already begun publication of Naohito Miyoshi’s Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V manga series last August in its digital English edition of Shonen Jump, a popular digital and paperback anime publication from Japan. The paperbacks often come with special promotional cards that can be used in a duelist’s deck and are highly sought after because of their limited print runs.
The Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series has run for almost 18 years if you count the first animated series run from Toei Animation. Over these years, there has been a total of five different protagonists.
The most well-known protagonist of all is Yugi Moto of the first series, putting the card game into the spotlight all those years ago. His epic duels with Pegasus, Kaiba, and Marik inspired a generation of players to take up the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game.
The Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V anime, the latest in a long line of animated series inspired by the Kazuki Takahashi’s manga, sees our latest protagonist Yūya Sakaki introduce us to Pendulum Summoning for the first time. Japan premiered this new series back in April 2014 to coincide with the release of this mechanic.
Yūya Sakaki is a second-year middle school student whose favorite pastime is to humor those around him with entertainment duels. He wants to be just like his father before him, one of the biggest names in “Entertainment Dueling”.
Yūya has trained all his life to be just like his father by ensuring that he and his iconic trump card, the Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon, can reach the Action Duel cards located around the Action Duel Stadium. He gets his big break when he is invited to an exhibition match with the current champion of the Pro Duel world. It is here that he Pendulum Summons for the first time – getting the attention of every duel school in the land!
The Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V animated series also sees the return of some familiar faces from older series that take the show in a new direction. It has a similar aesthetic to the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX series where dueling schools exist, but, this time, the show’s characters all study a specific summoning mechanic that are all considered to be rivals of one another. Advance, Synchro, Xyz, and Fusion summoning take center stage in this high entertainment dueling world.
As with any Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series, things get very dark, very quickly. People’s lives are often put at risk in high-stakes duels where the loser could lose their soul or their life – making dueling a lot less of a children’s card game and more of a world-saving phenomenon!
Are you ready to be entertained? Stay tuned for the season premiere coming in February.
