Super Popular Card Game Exploding Kittens Gets a Digital Release

Only a few card games have earned a cult following among non-gamers because of their content and unique gameplay. Super popular games such as Cards Against Humanity and Exploding Kittens managed to change the way people think about tabletop card games forever.

Exploding Kittens, well, exploded (pun most definitely intended!) onto the scene in January of 2015. The game launched on Kickstarter at this time and surpassed its original $10,000 asking pledge to become the most-backed campaign of all time by securing a phenomenal $8,782,571 from 219,382 backers. The game became an instant smash hit with its quirky and distinctive theme.

2993446-iphone6_01Because Exploding Kittens surpassed all expectations, the team has now delivered us a digital offering for up to 6 players, almost exactly one year after the original Kickstarter launch. The digital download is priced at $1.99 on iOS, making it far cheaper than the boxed version which averages around $20 at most retailers.

The core gameplay and rules remain the same with the only difference being that you can play with new and old friends wirelessly. The game has launched as a Bluetooth game among friends for now with the online feature coming a little later. However, the developers have made all of the in-app purchases available for free at this time, so there is a reason to jump onto whatever iDevice you own and download it immediately!

Exploding Kittens is not your average card game, oh no… This is one game that can ruin friendships and will likely be the cause of more (digital) table flips than any other game out there. The randomness of the game can be unforgiving, as well as the forward planning of your opponents if you’re not careful.

To win the game, you must be the last player who has not yet been covered in exploded kitty bits. All players have to take an action and draw a card on each of their turns. Each draw has the smell of risk (or is that kitty litter?), as drawing an ‘Exploding Kitten’ puts you out of the game. The only way to avoid exploding is to hold a ‘Diffuse’ card that allows you to diffuse the kitten and then place it wherever you like in the deck. This gives you a distinct advantage and allows you to set up some feline explosions of your own!

Exploding Kittens is a party favorite among card and board gaming fanatics and casual players alike. It is the perfect game for killing time or as a starter to a gaming evening. If you like tongue-in-cheek humor and ruining friendships, then this is definitely going to be right up your alley.

The developers have given no word on an Android release date yet, but with that much funding it would be remiss of them to ignore the world’s largest mobile marketplace. With over $8 million to spend, it’s bound to come sooner or later. Let’s hope for sooner though, shall we?
